Oscar Peterson, one of the world’s best known jazz pianists, died Sunday at age 82.Born on Aug. 15, 1925, near Montreal, he learned to play trumpet and piano at a young age, but after a bout with tuberculosis had to concentrate on the latter. He made a name for himself as a jazz virtuoso & was often compared to piano great Art Tatum for his speed and technical skill.

Back then it was the ’Hair Bands’ being marketed & mass produced by record execs, each spewing out the same formulated power ballad. Now 20 years later it’s the ‘American Idol Pop Star’ & media driven mentality that dictates the airwaves.

Legendary jazz & fusion keyboardist, writer & musician Joe Zawinul died from cancer in Vienna on Tuesday, September 11.

“Joe Zawinul is one of my oldest friends in the music business. He was a force as a composer and an amazing conceptualizer. He opened up a doorway between jazz and rock n’ roll and was a major influence on Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and me. Here’s vid of one of my favorite guitarist’s Wes Montgomery (aka ‘The Thumb’ because of his picking technique.) Filmed in Belgium in 1965 the jazz quartet performs John Coltrane’s  Impressions.

 Wes Montgomery is often considered the greatest of modern Jazz guitarists. Following the early work of swing/pre-bop guitarist Charlie Christian and gypsy-jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wes arguably put guitar on the map as a bebop or post-bop instrument. Although Johnny Smith was the guitarist in the original New York Bebop scene, and Tal Farlow also made amazing contributions in the 1950’s to bebop guitar, each of these men curtailed their own output in the 1960s, creating a vacuum that Montgomery naturally filled with virtuousic playing. While many Jazz players are regarded as virtuosos, Montgomery was unique in his wide influence on other virtouosos who followed him, and in the respect he earned from his contemporaries. To many, Montgomery’s playing defines jazz guitar and the sound that many try to emulate. It is hard to argue there was a more influential Jazz guitarist than Wes Montgomery.

 - Max Roach, the master jazz drummer/ percussionist whose rhythmic innovations and improvisations defined bebop jazz during a wide-ranging career where he collaborated with artists from Duke Ellington to rapper Fab Five Freddy, has died after a long illness. He was 83.  (from ap)

In case some of you don’t know he’s the musician/ inventor/ legend who invented mult-track recording & the famous solid body electric ’Les Paul’ guitar.  He was also an incredible guitarist & entertainer in his own right working with the top people in the industry later forming the legandary duo with  Mary Ford.  She teamed with Paul in 1946,  married in 1949 & had 16 top ten hits in the early 1950’s .

  Now retired but very much active at age 92 he still plays at the Indium jazz club in New York City-amazing!

  I came across this auction in East Dennis, Mass. & included in this 1000 plus lot of Americana & marina art sale was a 1957 LEFT HANDED Les Paul Custom. It was one of 383 produced & very few were left handed. Since I’m a lefty guitarist & LP owner too it was a great to see it included. A New York dealer had the highest bid of $247,000!

:: John Coltrane was known for coming into the studio with unrehearsed songs - “Giant Steps” was no exception. On the original recording, Tommy Flanagan (piano) is heard playing a very choppy start-stop solo, which is a stark reminder of how difficult it can be to play over the root movement by 3rd changes of “Giant Steps.” In addition, the original recording of “Countdown” (considered by many prominent jazz musicians to be one of the toughest charts) begins with just Coltrane and Lex Humphries (drums) playing. The other musicians couldn’t keep up with the changes to the chart, but finally caught on in the end.
Later on in his career Tommy Flanagan recorded Giant Steps again having better prepared to play a coherent solo.

Pat’s unique style & sound influenced many a guitarist including myself. You can hear his trademark sound played by others in many of today’s recordings.

As most of you know legendary saxaphonist Michael Brecker passed away last week at age 57 following a two and a half year battle with MDS and then leukemia. My introduction to his work was his jazz-rock group “Dreams” in 1970 & “The Brecker Bros.” in 1975.

Luckily we have a vast amount of recorded music to remember him by. An amazing musician that we’ll miss deeply. Here’s just a partial credits listing.

Here’s a video I made using trial software. A short instrumental jazz/ symphonic/ soundtrack composition & Internet collaboration featuring Alexis Van Eeckhout (Belgium) on tenor sax. With yousendit.com I sent him the backing track, he then sent back his sax track that I mixed & used for this video.

This is the rough mix & demo verison; not final or mastered.

I watched a PBS special on Ella Fitzgerald the other night with Joe Pass accompanying her on a few tunes. Truly great performances & Joe’s been one of my favorite guiatrists for years ever since I bought his ‘Joe Pass Guitar Chords’ book back in the 1970’s.

About JOE PASS:
Born into a non-musical family, Joe started to play the guitar when he was 9. He remembers his father Mariano, a steel mill worker, recognising early that his son had “a little something happening” and pushing him constantly to pick up tunes by ear, play pieces not written specifically for the instrument, practice scales and not to “leave any spaces” - that is, to fill in the sonic space between the notes of the melody. As early as 14, Joe started getting gigs and soon was playing with bands fronted by greats such as Tony Pastor and Charlie Barnet, honing his guitar skills and learning the music business. He began spending significant amount of time away from his home, traveling with small jazz groups and eventually moving from Pennsylvania to New York City. He did not pick up drinking and other bad habits from the musicians directly, but, in his words, “it was part of the whole scene”. In a few years Joe fell victim to drug abuse, and spent much of the 1950s in relative obscurity. Pass managed to emerge from it through a two-and-a-half-year stay at a (since discredited) drug rehabilitation program, Synanon. During that time he at first abandoned the instrument completely, and returned to playing very slowly. His first “comeback” record in 1962, titled “The Sounds of Synanon”, finds him playing a solid body rock guitar donated to the program.

I’m a musician & writer influenced by all styles of music. My tunes are a mix of jazz-rock, fusion, blues, film, Latin jazz, pop/ rock, symphonic, new-age & experimental music.

My main studies growing up were guitar, french horn, music composition, scoring, big band jazz performance & improvisation. I started performing professionally in Detroit & later touring the U.S..

In 2001 started writing & releasing my home recorded demos which includes my ‘Hidden Symmetry’ projects; internet collaborations featuring talented artists worldwide.
